Rapid developments in laptops and mobile phones are leading to the equally rapid abandonment of old models which no longer meet the mark, according to new research by technology experts GBI Research.

The generation of e-waste has grown sharply in the last two decades and will continue to grow swiftly as technology becomes more advanced. Mobile phones, once merely a tool of communication, now also function as cameras, video recorders, music players and handheld computers. These constant upgrades are increasing the volume of discarded mobile phones, spurring the need for safe disposal of such waste.

Increasing numbers of mobile users now exist and technology is being rapidly discarded from households in both developed and developing economies, with e-waste becoming one of the fastest growing waste streams in the world, according to GBI Research. While developed economies such as the US have a high rate of e-waste generation due to high replacement rates, emerging countries like India and China represent a budding new market for electrical and electronic goods.

The market penetration of Personal Computers (PCs) and mobile phones is still quite low in India, but is expected to grow rapidly in the future.
