Summary: The Bulgarian pharmaceutical market has increased by 12.1% to EUR 392.7mn last year, accelerating from 10.1% growth posted in 2004, data from the Bulgarian Drugs Agency indicate. However, while the consumption of imported drugs has increased by 19.1% to EUR 295mn, the sales of locally produced drugs have dropped 4.7% to EUR 97.6mn. The local sales of the country’s two most important drug makers (Sopharma and Actavis) have been disappointing in Q1. Some of the more important latest developments include: (i) net profit of Sopharma drops 43% y/y in Q1; (ii) four local firms enter ownership structure of Sopharma; (iii) Sopharma acquires local Biopharm Engineering; (iv) Sales of Biovet surge y/y in Q1; (v) Net profit of Bulgarian Rose Sevtopolis doubles y/y in Q1, company to raise up to EUR 4.6mn through a capital hike; (vi) Eli Lilly selects Tchaikapharma as its strategic partner for Bulgaria; (vii) National Health Insurance Fund halves distributor mark-ups.
