After a weak start of the current year, the pharmaceutical market in Poland is back on track. It is expected to grow by about 6% y/y. Despite all the weaknesses starting from catastrophic situation of the public healthcare, analysts reiterate their strong opinion about the drug industry's projections. Increasing consumption power of the Polish society, coupled with ageing tendencies, are the key drivers.
The New Reimbursement Act is underway. As always, experts see some steps in the right direction, but also possible threats. The introduction of reimbursement procedure based on an individual administrative decision and announcements of lists of reimbursed products are the steps in the right direction. Meanwhile, the main objection to the law is that it contains too many restrictive tools, whose introduction may increase drug prices for patients and end up even with the lack of access to some medicines.
Investors started the current year with high M&A expectations. Funds have announced investment plans and the Polish treasury was eager to sell its stake in drug companies. After ten months, most of these plans have remained unfulfilled.
On the other hand, there is a soaring wave of biotechnological companies looking for capital on NewConnect. Their plans give an impression that Poland could develop into one of the most dynamic places of financing for a new bio-tech revolution.
