Merchant Traffic Managers (MTMs) are the great-unsung heroes of the merchant silicon world. While the excitement over devices such as NPUs have peaked, waned, and been reincarnated, the MTMs have quietly been shipping to customers all over the world to help a wide spectrum of different pieces of networking equipment handle its data in an optimal manner. Perhaps one of the reasons this area of the semiconductor market has not garnished much attention is that the mathematics and mechanisms behind what makes a good traffic management solution is so complex, not many have the patience to learn about these fascinating slivers of silicon.

But regardless of why this market seems to fly under the radar, hundreds of millions of dollars of MTMs will be delivered in 2003. By 2007, this market will climb well over half a billion dollars. In fact, MTM's revenues will remain at around double the combined Metro and Core NPU revenues for the entire forecast period. This report analyses 25 different market segments based on In-Stat/MDRs extensive equipment database, to project this market for the next five years and explain what aspects will drive MTMs the most in the near future.
