Traffic Managers: The Unsung Heroes of Merchant Silicon

Merchant Traffic Managers (MTMs) are the great-unsung heroes of the merchant silicon world. While the excitement over devices such as NPUs have peaked, waned, and been reincarnated, the MTMs have quietly been shipping to customers all over the world to help a wide spectrum of different pieces of networking equipment handle its data in an optimal manner. Perhaps one of the reasons this area of the semiconductor market has not garnished much attention is that the mathematics and mechanisms behind what makes a good traffic management solution is so complex, not many have the patience to learn about these fascinating slivers of silicon.
