Media Servers in the Home: Threats & Opportunities for Content Developers
In-Stat/MDR, Aug 2004, Pages: 31
In the rapidly converging world of digital technology and entertainment, one emerging product category that is causing concern among content developers is the media server. Media server products are commonly either a PC based on Microsofts Media Center Edition operating system, or they are consumer electronics devices, like advanced set top boxes, that offer broadband connectivity and hard disk drive-based storage.
While the penetration of media server products is currently modest, their anticipated growth presents content developers not only with threats to their existing business models, but also with opportunities to create new revenue-generating businesses.
This report examines how both Media Center PC products and consumer electronic-based media server products are being developed and marketed, and it provides five-year worldwide unit shipment and revenue forecasts for media server products.
It also identifies specific threats and opportunities for the content development community arising from the development of media server products. This community includes motion picture studios, television studios, and recording companies in the music industry.
