GE Healthcare Medical Device Company Intelligence Report
|
Description: |
GE Healthcare Medical Device Company Intelligence Report - GE Healthcare has expertise in medical imaging and information technologies, medical diagnostics, patient monitoring systems, disease research, drug discovery and biopharmaceutical manufacturing technologies. The company's products are designed to predict and detect disease earlier, monitor its progress and inform physicians to assist them in tailoring treatment for patients. The division manufactures, sells and services a wide range of medical equipment that helps provide a fast, non-invasive way for doctors to see broken bones, diagnose trauma cases in the emergency room, view the heart and its function, and identify early stages of cancers or brain disorders.
GE Healthcare's product portfolio includes diagnostic imaging systems such as X-ray, digital mammography, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance (MR) ultrasound and molecular imaging technologies. It also manufactures patient monitoring, bone densitometry, anaesthesiology and oxygen therapy, and neonatal and critical care devices. Medical diagnostics and life sciences products include diagnostic imaging agents used in medical scanning procedures, drug discovery, biopharmaceutical manufacturing and cellular technologies. The company's product services include remote diagnostic and repair services for medical equipment manufactured by GE and by others, as well as computerised data management and customer productivity services.
GE Healthcare's products and services are sold worldwide to hospitals, medical facilities, pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, and to the life science research market.
Based in Buckinghamshire in the UK and with operations in North and South America, Europe and Asia, GE Healthcare is a business unit of GE Technology Infrastructure, an operating segment of General Electric Company (GE). The company's US headquarters are located in Waukesha (near Milwaukee) Wisconsin. GE Healthcare's products and services are sold in more than 100 countries worldwide to hospitals, medical facilities, pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, and to the life science research market. Worldwide, GE Healthcare employs more than 46,000 people and, in 2010, generated revenues of US$16.9 billion.
In January 2011, Smiths Group rejected a US$2.45 billion offer for its largest division, Smiths Medical, from an undisclosed suitor. Smiths Group remains one of the last significant remaining conglomerates left in the UK and its Medical division has long been seen as a candidate for a spin-off or disposal. In recent times, such talk has intensified as the division has been restructured and revived, emerging as the group's largest operating subsidiary. Although the identity of the unsuccessful offer was not disclosed, media reports suggest that the approach came from Apax Partners, the UK private equity group. Other private equity groups were touted as potential bidders, but talk has also switched to rivals in the industry, including the possibility of GE Healthcare, Baxter, Covidien and Johnson & Johnson entering the fold, who may be in a position to submit higher bids.
GE is one of the largest and most diversified technology, media and financial services corporations in the world. In addition to healthcare, it has interests in the aviation; transportation; energy; home appliance and lighting; broadcasting and digital media; and consumer and business financing industries, amongst others. In 2010, the GE group generated revenues in excess of US$150 billion.
