The largest region in the global market, in value terms, in 2003, was the Americas, with the US providing the majority of its value. The Americas however were only marginally ahead of Europe, whose market spread was spread more evenly.

Shampoo is by far the largest category overall in the haircare market, claiming top position in all three regions covered. The colorants sector is undergoing a large increase in growth largely due to increasing availability of home-use products.

Procter & Gamble is the strongest company in the global haircare market, holding 23% of overall market share. It has achieved this positioning through a number if acquisitions, including the recent purchase of Wella in 2004.
