Our ratings on The Dai-ichi Life Insurance Co. Ltd. (A/Stable/--) reflect the company's strong competitive position as one of Japan's largest life insurers, ample mortality and morbidity gains, and very high financial flexibility. These strengths are partly offset by its capitalization, which we view as a weakness for the ratings despite a strong base, as well as relatively large negative spreads that are weighing on its profitability.
