Our ratings on The Dai-ichi Life Insurance Co. Ltd. (A/Stable/--) reflect the company's strong competitive position as one of Japan's largest life insurers, ample mortality and morbidity gains, and very high financial flexibility. These strengths are partly offset by its capitalization, which we view as a weakness for the ratings despite a strong base, as well as relatively large negative spreads that are weighing on its profitability. In Standard & Poor's Ratings Services' view, Dai-ichi Life maintains a strong competitive position as one of Japan's largest life insurers. As of March 31, 2012, in terms of policies in-force, the insurer held a 15.8% share (sum of the shares of Dai-ichi Life and its subsidiary, The Dai-ichi Frontier Life Insurance Co....
