Telecommunications Services in Malaysia : Market Analysis
Access Asia Ltd, Feb 2004
This updated report sees Access Asia’s series of telecoms and communications reports for East Asia extended to include coverage of Malaysia. The Malaysian telecoms sector is growing rapidly, and is becoming highly developed.
Malaysia’s mobile phone sector has been dogged by accusations of poor quality network services that have led to high churn rates among the major service providers in the last eighteen months. This has meant high levels of advertising spend by operators to gain market share and a battle for subscribers.
The rapid growth of the pre-paid mobile segment has also intensified competition in the market. Pre-paid means that mobile services are now sold at a far greater variety of outlets including petrol stations, banks and retailers. The pre-paid market is driven by convenience and has placed greater logistical constraints on the operators, though has opened up a new trenche of subscribers.
WAP proved to be a costly exercise that generated little additional revenue in Malaysia, however, SMS messaging is becoming increasingly popular among the young.
