In 2013, aggregated UK telecommunications retail revenues were estimated to have grown in value by 1.1%, following a similar rate of growth in 2012. This has reversed a recent trend towards decline in the telecommunications sector following reductions in mobile and fixed voice revenue, as a result of increasing propensity toward text and Internet Protocol (IP) communication platforms.

Growth in the market in 2012 and 2013 has largely been driven by the ever-increasing demand for fixed-line broadband services in the market, alongside the continued strength of mobile messaging and data services, and a return to growth in mobile voice services following the launch of 4G (fourth generation) mobile communication network services in 2012.

Strong performance in the mobile sectors of the industry has been driven by the massive demand and widespread proliferation of high-connectivity mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablet computers, which provide access to a diverse range of communications channels, from traditional voice services to text messaging, e-mail, social networks, instant messaging (IM), micro-blogging and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP).
