Uruguay has developed one of the most advanced telecommunications markets in Latin America. Its fixed line density is one of the highest in the region at 32.5%, which represents a growth of 16% from 2001. In 1997, Uruguay was the first country in Latin America, the sixth in the world, to become fully digitalised. Every town with a population of over 10,000 is connected to the national fibre optic backbone network.
