2002 Product Development Metrics Research Summary


Description: The most common system used to manage capacity is still the spreadsheet as reported by 29% of respondents, with no underlying project management system.

In general, capacity planning and management tools are not tied in to any company-wide systems.

Industry has not standardized around any common system for managing capacity planning and resource allocation.

This finding is from the 2002 Product Development Metrics Survey conducted by Goldense Group, Inc (GGI).

GGI collected data on metrics used by product research and development (R& D) centers throughout North America, Europe and Asia. GGI surveyed 83 companies that produce a wide range of products.

This "Summary" report amplifies the "Highlights" report with 51 pages of graphical presentation materials, further clarifying practices in loading the RD& E capacity pipeline, providing capacity for RD& E activities, balancing cross-functional resources, using systems, tools, and metrics to manage capacity, and RD& E metrics used in industry.

This "Summary" report contains results for the survey population analyzed as a whole, while the more detailed "Results" report contains segment analyses.
