There has also been a significant increase in the number of competitors in the E-commerce market in Indonesia, including leading companies such as Rakuten Inc., eBay Inc., and Sumitomo Corp. In addition, local start-ups and state-owned utility companies have joined the race, sensing the increased popularity of e-commerce. ”

According to the report, one of the major drivers in this market is the sustained and planned support by the government to develop the market. The Indonesian government has introduced many initiatives that have offered good dividends for the market. National ICT policies such as the national fiber optic Papala Ring network are aimed at bridging the digital gap between the rural and urban areas of the country and increasing the internet penetration. Other programs initiated by the government are e-Education, e-Procurement, e-Budget, National Single Window, Single Identity Number or National Identity Number, and the Software Legalization Program that would help develop the overall IT infrastructure.

Further, the report states that one of the major challenges is the increase in software piracy. More than 85 percent of the Microsoft software products used in the country are pirated, which is a major challenge for the market. Indonesia is ranked among the top 20 countries with the highest piracy rates in the world.
