India's gem and jewellery industry is one of the largest foreign exchange earners for India. The gems and jewelry industry is controlled by the government through its state-owned trading outfits and banks. However, efforts are on for greater private sector participation and initiative especially in the shape of more investment from global majors like De Beers in mining and processing.
