With the approval of the 10 Gigabit Ethernet standard, optical networking is moving ever closer to the forefront of the industry. Traffic bottlenecks and the demand for additional bandwidth continue, and administrators are increasingly looking to Gigabit Ethernet to address these problems. The networking downturn and cut in telecom spending, however, have slowed the development of optical technology, with several large vendors suspending research and development activities. Nevertheless, a handful of smaller vendors persisting with the technology have made some advances.
