Telecommunications in Pakistan
Faulkner, March 2003, Pages: 10
Pakistan's telecommunications market is about to undergo some major changes, with the impending deregulation and privatization of Pakistan Telecommunications Company Limited (Ptcl), the incumbent service provider and former PTT. Ptcl's monopoly ran out in December 2002, but the various regulatory agencies have not worked out a plan for privatization or deregulation. The issue is now going before the newly seated National Assembly. Despite attempts to improve infrastructure, even basic dialtone service is still only accessible to a select portion of the people because of the country's geography and dispersed population. Economics and a poor literacy rate make the Internet and data communications industries access a luxury item.
