Telecommunications in India
Faulkner, March 2003, Pages: 12
The digital divide of India is one of the most pervasive in the world. Though the nation hosts a burgeoning IT sector growing in excess of 25 percent a year, its teledensity is among the lowest in the world, with less than five phones for every 100 citizens. Despite a recently deregulated telecommunications market and government initiatives aimed at quickly increasing the number of phones available to its citizens, efforts to narrow the disparity of telecommunications services available between urban and rural areas have made slow progress. This report examines the reasons behind the nation's digital divide, identifies what steps the government is taking to close it, and analyzes trends and players currently driving the market forward
