Extraction, Transformation and Loading (ETL) tools are used to move data from diverse sources, particularly relational database systems (Rdms) into data warehouses, where an organization's data is centralized for efficiency, analysis and data mining. ETL tools are provided by database management system vendors, as separate third party products, and as components of Business Intelligence (BI) and Enterprise Application Integration (EAI) suites. Major differentiators include capability to work in complex, heterogeneous environments, and transformational capacity. Transformation, where data is altered to fit data warehouse schema, is the most challenging area. Currently, there are a large number of competitors, but convergence is becoming more prevalent, particularly as unfavorable economic conditions continue. After a period of depression, the outlook for this area is improving.
