Managed storage has long been a critical component of a complete managed hosting solution. There is a growing movement to outsource storage and associated management requirements to a new class of supplier called the storage service provider (SSP), which sells storage capacity as a pay-per-use utility. With more than 80 percent of storage costs going to management and administration, and only 20 percent going to hardware and capital, the SSP offers companies the means to store and access data without the expense of hardware and software or the complexity of management. The SSP also performs crucial functions such as easy expansion, data backup and restoration, security, disaster recovery, and capacity planning. Although still an emerging market, some industry analysts see SSP revenues growing to over $6 billion in 2005 - a realistic projection, since data growth is expected to increase 90 percent through the same period.
