Satellite communications systems have developed rapidly over the past several years toward the provision of broadband and IP-based data services. These services are still trying to find a niche in the highly competitive infrastructure areas of broadband and wireless services. New developments in technology and regulation are gradually edging them away from traditional backbone broadcast roles toward direct-to-desktop Internet-based services. However, they still remain strongest in broadcast, multicast, and backbone roles, and in serving special purpose communications needs.
