Web services, the combination of application programs, data, and related services, promise to improve online business productivity by tying together traditional corporate infrastructures and e-business functions. While the overall concept is starting to play out, the issue of securing these services has been one of the major impediments to Web services being widely deployed. Backed by Microsoft, IBM, Verisign, and others, the Ws-security standard aims to add security and accountability to what has been touted as the next leap forward for Internet-based business.
