Face Off: Groupware
Faulkner, March 2003, Pages: 10
Despite their anticipated demise, the market for collaborative software-groupware-remains strong. In fact, groupware systems like Lotus Notes, Microsoft Exchange, and Novell GroupWise often serve as the foundation for corporate intranets, which ironically were initially predicted to someday supercede the necessity for groupware. Groupware systems are also deployed to strengthen collaborative commerce applications as well as facilitate online and wireless communications. As the groupware pioneer, Lotus Notes continues to battle for groupware market share, with IBM regularly enhancing and promoting its software. However, Microsoft Exchange has taken the market lead due to the sheer number of its users and widespread adoption of Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Office applications. Novell remains a strong third competitor intent on stealing market share from the top two--especially Microsoft--by offering enhanced usability and interoperability.
