CableLabs created a series of interface specifications aimed at providing clear standards for interoperable data communications products. Backed by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (Docsis), PacketCable, and OpenCable, CableLabs created a new industry standard for cable Internet access. With the demands for cable modems and supporting equipment on the rise, these specifications have come at just the right time, as manufacturers clamor to gain CableLabs certification. This article provides an overview of these standards and their usefulness to the market. It also discusses innovations and future directions for this industry and for these specifications.
