In-Car Navigation Devices and Systems Report

Description: In-car navigation systems are no longer the stuff of James Bond gadget fan dreams, nor do they remain the sole preserve of luxury car driving technology enthusiasts. In-car navigation devices and systems are now within the reach of even the tightest of auto accessory budgets. In-car navigation systems make flipping through acres of maps and enforced service station stops a thing of the past and eliminate the potentially hazardous problem of map reading while driving. Navigation devices and systems are becoming increasingly available in a plethora of formats ranging from in-built devices to PDA based applications, Pocket PC and mobile phone subscription based services. Are in-car navigation systems a must-have for the modern traveller or an unwarranted and unnecessary expense? Are navigation system users taking advantage of navigation system enabled cars or do they specifically purchase navigation systems separately? What are the most common types of navigation device currently in use? Do in-car navigation systems fail to meet or exceed driver expectation? Navigation devices and system availability is currently at a premium across a diverse range of platforms including in-built car systems, PDA based applications, Pocket PC and mobile phone subscription IP based services. We see then, that the car navigation market is rich in its diversity of available solutions all of which address and meet the needs of very different target markets and price conscious wallets. This study was conducted online from 20th March to 21st April 2003 using a stratified sample of 304 respondents selected from the Metrinomics Online Expert Panel of 11,000 plus members. The report comes replete with a handy glossary of navigation related terms and detailed market and technology overviews of the respective technologies for better market orientation.
