Seizing the SME Opportunity in Latin America
Pyramid Research, Inc, Feb 2005, Pages: 40
Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) represent an important target for telecoms service providers operating in Latin America. We estimate that the business market generated roughly US$21bn in telecom service revenues in Latin America in 2004, which is equivalent to 53% of total fixed telecom service revenues in 2004. Based on our research, 40% of SMEs plan to add new telecom services, and 30% intend to increase their spending levels in 2005. This is only the beginning as we expect the Latin America SME segment to grow at a double-digit rate over the next five years.
For service providers to capitalize on pockets of opportunity such as the SME segment, a clear understanding of the requirements and expectations of these companies is fundamental.
In this report, we present the main findings of a series of surveys conducted throughout Latin America with over 400 SMEs. Our surveys focused on Mexico and Brazil, two of the most important Latin American telecom markets revenue-wise. It also touched upon Argentina, a market that is growing rapidly as economic recovery materializes. We analyze SMEs adoption levels of a wide variety of telecom services, trends in expenditure and preferred purchasing channels. In addition, we review some of the strategies used by leading operators in the region to cater to the SME segment.
