Barr Pharmaceuticals Generics Company Intelligence Report

Description: Barr Pharmaceuticals is one of the USA’s leading generic manufacturers. The company has a policy of early market entry for generics, and as such is generally involved in a large amount of litigation. Sales also tend to fluctuate year on year, as specific exclusivities are gained and expire. Fluoxetine and ciprofloxacin are notable examples in recent years.

In June 2006, Barr’s offer to acquire Pliva was accepted by the board of the Croatian company. Barr faced strong competition for Pliva from Actavis, although the Icelandic company dropped out of contention after a three month bidding war. The acquisition was completed in October 2006, making Barr one of the world’s largest generic manufacturers, with an enhanced presence in Europe. The deal required a restructuring process for Barr.

In terms of its own manufacturing, Barr’s leading area of expertise is female healthcare, notably oral contraceptives. Barr’s leading OC is Seasonale, an extended cycle oral contraceptive, which itself began facing generic competition in 2006.

Sales in fiscal 2007 topped US$2.5 billion, an increase of 173% over 2006. Much of this rise was the result of the acquisition of Pliva, making comparisons with 2006 difficult. Net income stood at US$128.4 million.

In July 2008, Teva Pharmaceutical Industries announced plans to acquire Barr in a deal worth some US$7.46 billion. The deal was completed at the end of 2008, creating a new company operating in over 60 countries and employing some 37,000 people.
