Mylan Laboratories Generics Company Intelligence Report
Espicom Business Intelligence Ltd, Jan 2011, Pages: 40
Founded in 1961, Mylan, until 2007 known as Mylan Laboratories, is one of the largest US generic drug manufacturers. Until 2007, it was the sixth-largest generic manufacturer in the world, with its operations very much based in the eastern USA and with no significant presence in overseas markets.
However, this changed during the course of 2007, when Mylan successfully acquired Merck Generics from Germany’s Merck KGaA. The acquisition was completed in October 2007, and placed Mylan as the third largest generics manufacturer and now with a very significant overseas presence.
In August 2006, Mylan announced the purchase of a majority stake in Matrix Laboratories, for around US$736 million. Matrix is an Indian company with a presence in Europe through its Docpharma subsidiary. The deal was completed in January 2007.In 2009, Mylan acquired Matrix outright.
For 2009, Mylan reported revenues worth US$5.09 billion. This was a slight fall of 0.9% over the US$5.14 billion reported for 2008. Net income reached US$93.5 million, compared to a loss of US$335.1 million in 2008.
On 14th July 2010, Mylan announced plans to acquire Bioniche Pharma Holdings in a deal worth US$550 million in cash. Bioniche will provide Mylan with an immediate entry into the North American injectables market. Mylan plans to combine the acquisition with its existing UDL Laboratories unit. The acquisition completed in September 2010.
