Sales in the low and premium segments boosted, middle segment vanishes

The increasing disposable income of the Australian consumer has had a positive impact on sales of premium products. Products positioned between the economy and premium segments have lost their appeal to major manufacturers. Higher end models have become increasingly popular for all types of domestic electrical appliances. Local manufacturers have chosen to differentiate themselves by investing in new technology and product innovation and they have increasingly focused on the upper end of the middle segment and the premium end. More consumers have also chosen to invest in higher end products as a result of their increasing disposable income and the abundance of short term loans available.

Cheaper Asian imports continues to put pressure on general price levels

The continuing strength of the dollar and cheaper imports from Asia pushed prices down in 2005. The variety and number of imported brands sold at major specialist multiples have broadened and have boosted sales especially in the economy segment. Local manufacturers have voiced their concerns regarding the quality of these products, underlining the eroding margins which put both retailers and manufacturers in a tough position. The aggressive price competition intensified in refrigeration appliances, washing machines, dishwashers and heating & cooling appliances. As the average price levels have gradually declined for the majority of domestic electrical appliances, the local and well-established brands have chosen to shift focus to the premium end.

Seamless look and designer trends

With open-plan living becoming more popular, kitchens have become more of a large entertaining space. Consequently, more consumers have demanded that their kitchen fittings and appliances look seamless with perfect alignment. Increasing disposable income and consumer sophistication have contributed to this trend. Fully and semi built-in appliances and horizontal lines have shaped the “integrated kitchens” trend. Professional style and stainless steel appliances have enjoyed high growth levels.
