Frankenstein's Manager - Leadership's Missing Links
Oak Tree Press, Dec 2000
'There is no magic formula for making perfect leaders, just as we cannot create the perfect woman or man. . . . Trying to artificially create the perfect leader draws us towards creating Frankenstein's monster, an unnatural amalgam of disparate parts which do not belong together.'
In this thought-provoking and highly original book, Bill McAneny argues that management skills training does not work, does not lead to better performing managers. Instead, you end up with something like Frankenstein's monster, with a bunch of ill-fitting parts rather then a complete and coherent whole person.
Leadership must come from within. Managers must learn to understand themselves and those around them before meaningful change can occur. It is only through forging links — 'the connections forged in experience, the vital bonds that all great leaders, consciously or unconsciously, create around them' — that you can become the true leader you are capable of being.
At a time when organisations are crying out for real leadership, this book will be a refreshing and challenging read for anyone looking for lasting, continuous, transformational development in themselves and in the people they lead.
'Bill's book is a very easy read and one that I would recommend to all managers or aspiring managers who like to think 'outside the box'. . . . An excellent read!' Terry Gorman, Assistant Chief Executive, Nottinghamshire County Council
'I found Frankenstein's Manager to be full of common sense advice, dispelling many of the myths surrounding leadership development in a way that is entertaining and informative.' Mark Conway, Managing Director, Besam UK
Let's forget the idea of a perfect leader or a perfect management/ leadership training programme. We do not attend 'Friendship Skills' programmes, and yet we each manage to make, and keep, close friends. There are no expert leaders, just as there are no expert friends, or husbands, or wives.
This book is written primarily for leaders, but also for HR professionals, for consultants, for anyone who is interested in effecting lasting, memorable, transformational, continuous development in themselves, in the people they lead, in the people they serve.
