The Medical Device Market: Poland
Espicom Business Intelligence Ltd, Oct 2011, Pages: 62
In 2011, the Polish market for medical equipment and supplies is estimated at US$2,013.4 million, or US$53 per capita. The market experienced rapid growth until the end of 2008, but imports fell back sharply in the early part of 2009. The economic downturn has so far proved short, however, with growth resuming in 2010, albeit at a slightly lower rate than in previous years.
The Republic of Poland is bordered by Russia (Kaliningrad), Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine, Germany, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. It was one of the ten countries to join the EU in May 2004. The Polish population stands at 38.1 million in 2011. Around 13.3% of residents are aged 65 years or over.
Funding for healthcare in Poland is principally through the health insurance system. The National Health Fund was established in 2003, replacing the 16 Regional Health Funds. Financing remains a problem, although Poland has boosted spending levels since 2004. It now spends around 7.4% of GDP on healthcare. This still does not fully cover the cost of medical equipment and upgrades required in hospitals.
The size of the private healthcare sector is slowly expanding. The availability of private facilities improved significantly in 2000, when bed numbers increased three-fold. Around a quarter of health expenditure is private, although out-of-pocket payments account for most of this.
Around 85% of the medical device market is supplied by imports. Germany and the Netherlands were the leading suppliers in 2009, together accounting for around 50% of imports. Germany was the leading supplier of most categories of medical equipment.
