US Surgical Medical Device Company Intelligence Report
Espicom Business Intelligence Ltd, July 2007, Pages: 44
United States Surgical (US Surgical), based in Norwalk, Connecticut, USA, is a leading manufacturer of wound closure products such as sutures and mesh for hernia repair and incontinence, as well as endomechanical surgical devices such surgical staplers, clip appliers and trocars.
The company is part of Covidien, a new independent, publicly-traded company which was previously Tyco International’s Healthcare division. US Surgical had been a unit of Tyco International since 1998. Today, US Surgical comprises the Surgical Devices segment of Covidien’s larger Medical Devices division.
US Surgical’s products are available through two primary business divisions: the Auto Suture Division which offers surgical devices and laparoscopic instrumentation for general and specialty procedures; and the Syneture Division which offers one of the most comprehensive suture product lines in the industry. In addition, the company’s USS Sports Medicine unit manufactures devices for the minimally-invasive repair of soft tissue injuries in the upper extremities and the knee.
Covidien has recently undertaken measures to enhance its Surgical Devices operations, with a focus on international and product portfolio expansion. Since the beginning of 2006, the company has acquired Floréane Medical Implants, a developer of surgical support implants for parietal, urological and gynaecological surgery; Confluent Surgical, a developer and supplier of polymer-based technology used in sprayable surgical sealants and anti-adhesion products; PolySuture, a Brazilian manufacturer of suture materials; and Sorbx LLC's AbsorbaTack product, an absorbable tack technology for use in inguinal and ventral hernia repair. Other efforts to enhance growth have included an increased focus on R&D and an expansion of the company’s sales force.
