By 2016 the peer-to-peer market will be worth £5 billion in the UK and £ 36 billion within a decade.

Peer to peer lending is an increasingly popular way of financing projects, business ideas, and personal loans through small contributions from a large number of individuals, and the financial market.

2014 will end with over £ 2 billion, half of which was lent in 2014 , a massive achievement for what a decade ago was just a vague idea.

Although the UK may have smaller volumes than the USA, it has a wider variety of innovative niche platforms.

Compared to the fudging and backsliding of US and other regulators, the UK has stepped up with clear and practical legislation.

Globally, UK based platforms are leading the charge around the globe by setting up subsidiaries or joint ventures, or buying local platforms.

Not everything is as rosy as the industry cheerleaders may suggest, with several platforms closing, never opening or clearly designed to make quick money for owners.

Over the next decade the peer-to-peer industry will grow rapidly and is part of the alternative finance movement that is forcing banks to change some of their ways. Banks are finding ways to make money from peer to peer platforms, such as buying up loan books, providing finance, introducing customers, investing in platforms or even launching their own platforms.

This report provides an up to date analysis of the industry, the variations, platforms and the future. It is an essential read for anybody thinking of setting up a platform, or a financial group considering links with platforms.

The author is a financial analyst with several recent crowd funding reports to his name, as well as books and market reports.
