DC-DC Converter Modules: Economic Factors, Market Drivers & Technology
|
Description: |
This Power Paper provides the qualitative underpinnings of the Eight Edition of our "DC-DC Converter Modules: Global Market Forecasts and Competitive Environment" market study. Specifically, this Power Paper addresses the economic factors, application drivers, and business model changes that are driving dc-dc converter sales. Additionally, pricing pressures, technology developments, voltage regulator modules developments and packaging trends, including brick form factor shifts, are discussed in detail.
Scope: Identification and discussion of general dc-dc converter market characteristics, drivers and trends, including discussions of multi-phase dc-dc converters, system bus architectures, isolation voltages, VRMs, output current trends, and so on. A top-level analysis of economic and business factors affecting the dc-dc converter market is also included.
Topics covered include:
- Economic Factors
- Application Drivers
- Business Models
- Packaging Trends
- VRM Developments
- Technology Developments
- Pricing Pressures
Methodology
Primary data were obtained using "open questionnaires." A combination of telephone and in-person interviews were conducted. In-person interviews were conducted either in the plant where the individual works or at various trade shows. The interviews conducted at trade shows were typically performed in a more informal atmosphere and were generally very successful in gathering good quantities of hard data and insights from the individuals being interviewed. All interviews conducted in the course of this research were performed on a confidential basis. The data were used in combination with the responses from all other respondents.
The primary and secondary research included all possible major application areas for dc-dc converters. The data-gathering methodology included primary research and data collection in all regions worldwide and was not limited in any way to North America. Secondary research was performed using all available published sources including, but not limited to, nonproprietary, previously performed and related work by us, all available trade journals, proceedings from related trade conferences, previous industry studies, annual reports, 10Ks, advertising, product literature, and so on.

Summary: |
The market for dc-dc converters is driven by many impulses including broad economic factors, application trends, business model changes, and technological developments. In each case, these drivers may provide opportunities for some and threats to others. For instance, the communication segment is rife with change. Voice-over-Internet Protocol (VoIP) continues to blur the line between telecom and datacom, and as VoIP takes off, makers of converters for traditional telecom applications may face a threat, especially if VoIP takes off over cable broadband instead of digital subscriber lines (DSL). However, growth of VoIP creates numerous opportunities, such as converters for another emerging technology, Power-over-Ethernet. The fairly recent formation of alliances such as the Distributed-power Open Standards Alliance (DOSA) and the Point-of-Load Alliance (POLA) creates potential business shifts that may create opportunities and threats depending on membership in the club. Dc-dc converter manufacturers have come under increasing price pressure as a result of production shifts and shifting power architectures. Potentially, the impulse with the greatest impact may be the emergence of digital power management and digital power control in this market. The shift to digital power may create as large a shift as the transition from linear to switch-mode power supplies. Those companies that make the transition effectively may be in a better position to make gains once the shift occurs. On the other side, however, those companies that stay firmly entrenched in today's analog solutions rightly see digital power as a threat. These impulses combined with others will drive much of the growth in this market. |
