New Capabilities for High-Bay Metal Halide Technology
E SOURCE, Jan 2005, Pages: 15
A review of recent developments in metal halide lighting technology. Learn about how they work and the best applications.
Two developments in metal halide technology - ceramic arc tubes and electronic ballasts — have recently become available in mid-wattages sizes (250 to 400 watts) appropriate for high-bay applications. They bring a number of improvements over earlier metal halide systems: Ceramics offer improved color quality and boost end-of-life efficiency, while electronic ballasts improve efficiency and decrease lumen depreciation losses.
These new technologies won't enable metal halide lighting to leapfrog past fluorescent lighting in many cases, but pulse-start metal halide lamps, especially ceramic with electronic ballasts, can be better than the best fluorescent systems in high-bay applications where color quality, fixture aesthetics, and uniform uplight are important, and where facilities are subject to high and/or low temperature extremes.
