The trade fair Techtextil—held in Frankfurt, Germany, every two years—is the most important platform for developments in technical textiles. At the June 2005 event, the impact of developments in nanotechnology was clearly demonstrated—from the latest advances in carbon nanotube fibre spinning through to the commercial employment of nanofibres in advanced filtration materials.

At the same time, the use of advanced textiles as preferred performance materials in many industrial processes continues to increase. Reflecting this trend, the event served to showcase advances in enhancing the properties of fibres and fabrics for specific functions and, as a consequence, adding to their value on the market.

Techtextil's organiser, Messe Frankfurt, attempts to break down the technical textile industry into 12 categories, according to end use applications. However, this can be confusing and results in many crossovers. In fact exhibits at the show can be divided into four categories, namely: new fibres and yarns; new fabrics and materials; new processing aids; and new machinery developments.

Messe Frankfurt has done much in recent years to make Techtextil a global brand—largely by holding more modest versions of the German show in North and South America, China and Russia. The European show is, however, by far the most successful and there is every likelihood that the duration of the next event, to be held in Frankfurt in 2007, will be extended beyond the normal three days.
