Electric Power Market in China 2005

The development of the power industry is very sensitive to the macro-economy. This is particularly true in China where three quarters of the electricity consumption comes from industrial demand. The Chinese government has carried out positive fiscal policies to increase investment in recent years. The domestic economic development is doing well. According to the National Electricity Industry Statistics Report, electricity generation in 2004 reached 2187 TWh, up by 14.8 percent YoY. However, the growth rate decreased 0.4 percent compared with the previous year. Nuclear power generation increased steadily and reached 50.1 TWh, increased by 14.1 percent YoY. In 2004, the overall electricity consumption of China was 2173.5 TWhs, increased by 14.9 percent YoY, which was the second high growth year following 2003 since China's adopting of reform and opening-up policy.
Power deficiency was the major issue in the electricity market in 2004, which was much more serious than 2003. In 2003, 21 provinces were reported to have power shortage problems while in 2004 the number increased to 24. The whole country was in a power shortage of about 10 million kilowatts while in 2004 over 30 million.
