Hard Disk Drives in CE: Primed for Impressive Growth
In-Stat/MDR, Oct 2005, Pages: 57
The Consumer Electronics (CE) market remains the fastest-growing market for Hard Disk Drives (HDDs). There are a host of HDD-based CE applications, such as Personal Video Recorders (PVRs), portable audio players, portable media players and gaming consoles that represent important revenue opportunities for HDD manufacturers. Other developing CE applications for HDDs include digital camcorders, GPS devices, and mobile phones.
This report covers industry trends and market drivers for integrated HDDs in CE devices. The forecast summary includes a comparison between worldwide shipments for the overall HDD market and worldwide shipments for 3.5-inch drives and smaller. It also takes an in-depth look at specific CE product segments in which HDDs are integrated. Five-year forecasts for the following CE product segments are included: -Personal Video Recorders -Video Consoles -Home Audio Jukeboxes -MP3 players -Portable Media Players
Alternative storage solutions, such as improved Flash, will continue to compete against small form factor HDDs. Nevertheless, HDD manufacturers are primed for impressive growth in the CE segment, especially as shipments of 1-inch HDDs escalate.
This report found the following:
The 1-inch-and-smaller HDD market will win out over the forecast period and represent 50% of all HDDs shipped to the CE segment by 2009.
Total worldwide shipments of hard drives will increase dramatically over the next five years, growing from approximately 304 million in 2004 to 500 million in 2009.
As a result of demand for storing increased amounts of data on smaller, portable devices, HDD manufacturers have strengthened efforts to introduce products utilizing perpendicular recording.
