Health concerns keep consumers away from carbonates
The media’s favourite health topic lately has been Canada’s rising obesity rates. Although not at a level comparable to their southern neighbours, Canadians are becoming heavier: a 2004 survey conducted by Statistics Canada indicated that the level of obesity was around 23%. Health concerns are great in many industrialised countries, but in Canada, with its public health care system, health problems are (rightly) seen as a drain on everyone’s wallet. This has had a huge impact on soft drinks. Consumers are moving away from highcalorie, low-nutrient beverages, such as cola carbonates, and into other, healthier sectors, such as water, juice and functional drinks.
