Analysing the Role of the Television Platform

- Business Rationale
- Service Description
- Media Center PC
- Screenshots
- Technology Solutions
- Marketing Considerations

Within the home environment, the PC is currently the dominant platform for accessing, playing and enjoying digital music. But today's PC implementation of digital music is far too complex for the category to penetrate into the mass market. Over the last year few years, Media center PCs have been introduced in an effort to 'dumb down' the digital entertainment experience, thereby allowing access to the living room but they are only part of the solution.

There is no doubt that the role of the television in the home entertainment mix is assured. And now that broadcasters and telecoms providers are aggressively planning to deploy broadband-equipped set-top boxes, an entirely new class of home entertainment services, including digital music, will be accessible using the home television.

The TV truly represents the next frontier for digital music in the home and an entirely new class of digital music services will emerge that will be super-simple to operate and thereby provide a gateway to the mass market.

This report takes a detailed look at what a TV Music service might look like: perhaps a music service introduced by an online music brand like Apple or a broadcaster like Sky? The report contains a detailed description of the user experience with many mock screenshots of the TV interface, which would be controlled using a TV-style remote control. In addition, the report contains architecture diagrams showing how the service would be added to a user's existing audiovisual set-up. The pros and cons of different technical approaches are explained by reviewing the technology, business and marketing considerations.
