"MEMSFoundries": Overview of MEMS Foundry & Contract Manufacturers
Yole Development, Feb 2006
We have edited an up to date analysis of the markets, strategies and evolution of the MEMS contract manufacturers and MEMS foundries. For the first time, you can have access to unique features: - Detailed analysis of MEMS foundries and contract manufacturers revenues evolution 2003-2010 - Detailed analysis of the 20 most important MEMS foundries worldwide - Analysis per company of the possible exit strategies - Identification and analysis of emerging applications, including consumer, mobile phones, energy… - Analysis of today relationship between MEMS foundries and contract manu-facturers and design houses/fabless companies - Scenario analysis of the evolution of the foundries and contract manufacturers business
Today, most of the contract manufacturers are full of work, both for development projects and production: we expect that the MEMS foundry and contract manufacturer markets will reach total revenue of more than 500 M$ in 2010, (a market multiplied by 3 in a 6 years period).
This growth is due to 3 main reasons: - Continuous increase of the activities of existing companies like DALSA Semiconductors, IMT, Silex, Tronic's, SMI, Micralyne … - Increase of the Taiwanese MEMS foundry activities, mainly linked to Taiwanese markets - New players are entering the market, targeting high volume applications like silicon microphone, inertial sensors, ink jet head …
The new players like Dai Nippon Printing (inertial sensors), Sony (silicon microphone) … are now producing in very large volume MEMS devices on 8' line. The example of Sony is significant: Sony has produced in 2005 more than 95 Munits for Knowles Acoustics and the growth rate is still very important.
A majority of the more traditional MEMS foundries and contract manufacturers have moved or are now moving from 4' to 6' manufacturing.
Already in 2004, the MEMS foundries and contract manufacturers have got most of the top 10 place in the ranking of the highest growth companies. A similar analysis for 2005 is enclosed in the report. We forecast a two phases evolution trends in the next 5 years: - Strong growth between 2005 and 2008 of at least 38%, due to the introduction in production of key growth applications linked to mobile phone and consumer applications - Growth after 2009 is going back to 15% per year
In addition to the introduction of new products, we will see in the coming years that today system manufacturers with integrated manufacturing facilities will more and more subcontract the manufacturing to MEMS foundries/contract manufacturers: HP and Lexmark are a clear example of a system manufacturers with internal facility using also external foundries in order to have access to extra capacity with strategic partners.
The report is also analyzing thoroughly the applications and markets current and future growth areas of MEMS foundries and contract manufacturers, it will give you a complete analysis of the business and market trends from 2004 to 2010.
We are also providing details on the following points, which are fundamental for this industry: - What are today the relationships between foundries & contract manufacturers and MEMS design houses and fabless companies? - How these relationships will evolve in the next 5 years? - What is today the cost structure of a MEMS foundry and of a MEMS contract manufacturer? - How companies can be profitable?
An important part of the MEMS foundries and contract manufacturers have been financially supported by investors, either corporate ventures or venture capital funding. Most of the investments have been done in the last 4 to 5 years: now an important part of these investors are looking for exits strategies in order to get their money back.
The report is analyzing what could be the different exit strategies, presenting the 5 scenarios which are the most feasible and giving example of organizations (companies and financial firms) which could be the new owners of MEMS foundries and contract manufacturers in the next 3 years.
Apart from the analysis and the description of the applications and markets, the report is also providing a complete description of the 25 MEMS contract manufacturers and foundries, with a specific focus on the activities in Taiwan, Singapore and Japan, which are the countries where the growth has been very important since 2 years.
The report is providing up-to-date data and analysis on the MEMS foundries business and analyzes the key driving forces for the long trend growth of this industry.
Benefits of the report for MEMS foundries and contract manufacturers: - Analysis of the structure of the MEMS industry and evolution of the industrial food chain - Competitive analysis - Description of today markets and next evolutions - Proposal of exit strategies
Benefits of the investors in MEMS foundries and contract manufacturers: - Competitive analysis - Detailed analysis of the market and industry evolution - Analysis of the latest deals - Proposal of exit strategies - Ability to determine when the exit will be the most appropriate
