An Exploration of Consolidation in the Generics Industry
Decision Resources, Inc., Dec 2005, Pages: 16
The generics industry worldwide is undergoing an unprecedented period of consolidation. This trend began in the United States during the early and mid 1990s, but the focus turned to Europe and India in the late 1990s and continues into the early part of the 21st century. After the initial flurry of activity in the United States in the early 1990s, U.S. generics companies have shown little recent activity in terms of acquisitions, but elsewhere both the pace and scale of this consolidation have accelerated since 2000.
In this report, we examine the wave of M&As taking place across the generics sector and explore the reasons behind this consolidation, such as the competitive pressures in operation, the need for greater mass, and the use of acquisitions to facilitate market entry. We consider the implications of consolidation for the U.S. generics industry and other developed markets as the generics industry becomes more international in character and discuss the future of the generics industry and its likely impact on the branded pharmaceutical industry.
