Demographic and cultural factors expected to drive sales of the OTC healthcare industry

Brazil's ageing population will boost sales of OTC healthcare over the forecast period and beyond, as it is likely
to need further medical assistance and have higher expenditure on healthcare products. Self-medication is
another aspect that is likely to boost sales of OTC healthcare products, especially among consumers who don't
want to spend time visiting a doctor and take time off work. This sort of behaviour is particularly characteristic
of less affluent consumers, as the public health system is very inefficient in Brazil.

Healthy sales in 2005

In 2005, sales of OTC healthcare increased by 9% in current value terms over 2004. The positive sales
performance is mostly attributed to price adjustments, rather than volume growth, as there was no improvement
in the population's purchasing power, which plays an important role in pushing drugs sales up. A larger number
of consumers were also in debt.
