Competitive Analysis 3M/O-Cel-O Tonawanda
Corporate Development Associates, June 2004, Pages: 36
The purpose of this report is to present our findings on the operations of the the 3M manufacturing facility located in Tonawanda, New York.
3M Tonawanda is a manufacturing facility under the auspices of the 3M Abrasives Division. The plant has been in operation for almost fifty (50) years and was acquired by 3M from General Mills in 1991. This facility produces cellulose sponge and sponge laminate products. Other 3M plants that produce similar/duplicate products are located in Perth, Ontario, San Luis, Mexico and France and Australia.
3M Tonawanda has undergone two major expansions and upgrades since 1998. These expansions are described in detail in Section I and involve: 1) setting up three (3) Laminating Lines in 1999 and the construction of a Wet Air Oxidation System scheduled for completion in the summer of 2004. The budgets for these major projects were $31 million and $28.6 million respectively. As a result of the 1999 expansion (completed in 2000), 3M Tonawanda is the only US plant producing household sponge products for 3M. The sponge portion of the plant in Prairie du Chein, Wisconsin was closed in 2002. The Prairie du Cheinplant now produces other products for the 3M Abrasives Division.
