Broadband For Schools - Ireland 2006
iReach, Feb 2006, Pages: 15
The roll-out of broadband to schools is a crucial strand in the Department of Education and Science’s strategy of integrating information and communications technology (ICT) into teaching and learning, and the Department of Communication, Marine and Natural Resource’s wider vision of promoting the use of broadband technologies in local communities around the country.
In order to maximise the benefit of the broadband connections, all the schools will be connected to a central ‘Schools Network’. The Schools Network will be provided by the Higher Education Authority Network (HEAnet) and funded by the Department of Education and Science.
This report conducted by us examines the issues as well as the longer term benefits of the broadband for schools initiative.
It looks at the importance of the internet as an educational asset and global source of information.
It provides pupils with a global network that allows them to interact with persons from various different cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
It also lays the foundations for pupils in their future careers where the internet will undoubtedly have a huge influence on their business and occupational development.
