Radio Surrenders to the Digital Dashboard
Yankee Group, The, Jan 2003
Satellite radio, digital terrestrial or 'HD' radio, surround sound and video applications are encroaching on the in-car environment, furthering the decline in average time spent listening (TSL)to radio, an increasingly crowded dashboard, and heightened mobile media competition. Satellite radio will be the first technology to deliver a subscription-based media experience to the car -displacing a portion of radio and recorded music consumption.
Broadcasters will compete with new services with a digital solution of their own -HD radio. These over-the-air technologies will battle for drivers attention and dashboard real estate with enhanced recorded media such as MP3 files,DVD audio, and video playback.
Meanwhile, increased retail competition and changing OEM automaker environments will make product development a challenge. This report provides strategic guidance for automakers, retailers, manufacturers and component vendors. In addition, it predicts the potential of each new technology.
