About Semiconductor Foundry

Semiconductor foundries manufacture ICs based on the designs provided by certain companies. The majority of these companies are semiconductor fabless companies that design and sell hardware devices and semiconductor chipsets while outsourcing the fabrication process of the devices to semiconductor foundries. Semiconductor foundries are also known as semiconductor fabrication plants (usually referred to as fab).

Semiconductor foundries are of two types: Pure-play foundries and IDMs. This classification is used to differentiate between companies that perform in-house semiconductor manufacturing and fabless companies that outsource designs to third parties. Fabless companies outsource manufacturing to avail cost benefits.

The analysts forecast the global semiconductor foundry market to grow at a CAGR of 8.4 percent over the period 2014-2019.

Commenting on the report, an analyst from The author’s team said: “Portable electronic devices such as smartphones and tablets become obsolete after a short time. This is because of rapid launches of next-version models by vendors. The duration of the replacement-cycle period, on average, is 8-12 months. In the past, the replacement period was much longer. Because of the reduction in product-replacement-cycle time, the demand for semiconductor wafers in newly launched devices is expected to rise drastically, and this will increase the demand for ICs.”

According to the report, the availability of low-cost smartphones in emerging markets such as China and India and increased access to the Internet worldwide are expected to increase the shipment of smartphones. This is a significant increase from shipments in 2013 and is partly due to regional vendors introducing tablets in their home countries. Since the number of tablets sold by regional vendors will increase, it follows that semiconductor ICs, an integral part of such devices, will undergo a similar rise in demand, leading to market growth during the forecast period.

Further, the report states that the market requires high capital investment, which is a major challenge for its growth.
