This Market Report examines the UK market for temporary and contract recruitment agencies. The market is segmented into the following recruitment sectors: blue collar, computing/IT, drivers, education, financial, hotel/catering, nursing/medical, professional/managerial, secretarial/clerical and technical/engineering.
In the year to March 2005, the market was worth £20.27bn, according to the Recruitment & Employment Confederation (REC), which would represent a fall of 11.1% on the previous year. However, previous years' figures appear to have overstated the value of the market, so the real fall in the value of the market in the year to March 2005 is likely to have been considerably less than 11.1%. Industry opinion is divided on the value of the market for 2005 as a whole. If there has been an improvement, it has been a small one. Some firms reported that 2005 was a much better year, while for others it was disappointing.
The largest sectors of the market are blue-collar and secretarial/clerical staff. The strongest sectors in 2005 were finance and accountancy, hotel/catering, computing/IT and driving.
The recruitment industry remains a fragmented one, incorporating a number of very large companies and a huge array of small to medium-sized firms. The major companies include: Adecco Holdings (UK) Ltd, Allied Healthcare Group PLC, The Capita Group PLC, The Corporate Services Group PLC, Hays PLC, Kelly Services (UK) Ltd, Manpower PLC, MPS Group International PLC, Nestor Healthcare Group PLC, Pertemps Recruitment Partnership Ltd, Reed Executive PLC, Select Appointments PLC and Spring Group PLC.
There is relief in the industry that the EU Agency Workers Directive (AWD) has been shelved for the moment, while the EU plans a much broader directive covering the service sector. Meanwhile, the distinction between the definitions of permanent and temporary or contract employees continues to become ever more blurred, following several court cases since summer 2004. Another development has been the increase in online recruitment.
Steady year-on-year growth is forecast for the period from 2006 to 2010, although slightly higher growth is expected for 2006 than the rest of the forecast period. This assumes continuing steady growth in the economy, albeit at a slower rate than in the period from 2000 to 2005.
