MOBILE COMMUNICATIONS
Malaysia: Analyzing Asia’s Most Controversial 3G Auction
Malaysia’s second round of 3G auctions sent shockwaves through the country’s telecommunications sector, as third-place mobile operator Digi was refused a 3G license because it is controlled by Telenor of Norway. Senior Analyst Marc Einstein argues that in the medium term, Digi will still be able to compete in Malaysia, and he explores some of the alternate avenues that Digi might take in order to offer wireless broadband services.

China: PHS Is Here to Stay
Despite the fact that PHS networks are being phased out in other parts of Asia, Pyramid Research believes that by 2010, PHS subscriptions will still constitute 15 percent of China’s mobile subscriber base. Analyst Yiru Zhong explores how China’s operators are enhancing the service to remain competitive over the medium and long terms.

FIXED COMMUNICATIONS
Japan: NTT’s Bumpy Road to FMC
Facing eroding voice revenues and ongoing PSTN line disconnections, the Japanese fixed incumbent NTT has allotted over US$7bn in CAPEX for the coming year, with nearly half of this amount going towards its FTTH service. Analyst Jane Buenaventura analyzes NTT’s salvage plan and is cautiously optimistic that IPTV could emerge as a saving grace for the operator.
