The syngas and derivatives market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 9.5% between 2015 and 2020, to reach 213,100 MW thermal (MWth) by 2020. Asia- Pacific, with its thriving economies and rapidly expanding population, is expected to experience the highest consumption during the given period.

The major driving factors of this market include the growing need for chemicals, fuels, and electricity, which can be generated simultaneously to meet the requirements of the increasing population. The other growth driver is the feedstock flexibility of syngas production process, which means that it can be produced either from coal, natural gas, petroleum- based products, or biomass/waste, depending on the availability.

The syngas and its derivatives market has been analyzed in terms of consumption (MWth) for all major regions, namely Asia- Pacific, North America, Middle East & Africa, Europe, and South America. The consumption figures are further categorized on the basis of major countries in respective regions. Coal, natural gas, petroleum (petcoke and others), and biomass/waste are the four major feedstocks utilized for the production of syngas. Syngas production technologies READ MORE >

Syngas is the basic building block for the production of many chemicals, such as methanol, ammonia, hydrogen, and oxo-chemicals. In addition, it can be also used for the production of electricity, liquid fuels, and gaseous fuels. Among the major end use applications of syngas, the chemicals industry is expected to dominate the consumption during the forecast period of 2015-2020, primarily owing to the rising demand for methanol and ammonia across the globe; especially in the agricultural industry.

The global syngas production was recorded at 116,600.0 MWth in 2014 and is projected to reach 213,100.0 MWth by 2020, at a CAGR of 9.5% between 2015 and 2020. Asia-Pacific holds the largest share of the overall market, followed by Middle East & Africa and Europe. In terms of individual countries, the global market is dominated by China on account of the increased demand for chemicals and abundant coal reserves in the country. The growth of the syngas and derivatives market is primarily being driven by the rising demand for electricity worldwide. Furthermore, feedstock flexibility and the polygeneration nature of syngas for the production of electricity, chemicals, and fuels are also expected to be among the key factors driving the syngas and derivatives market during the forecast period.

The lack of considerable capital investment and funding is one of the restraints observed in the syngas and derivatives market. The lower dependency on crude oil for chemicals, fuels, and increasing utilization of natural gas has led to various opportunities for the players in the syngas and derivatives market.

The syngas and its derivatives market is highly diversified. The key players in the market are syngas technology licensors and manufacturers of syngas and its derivatives. The leaders in technology licensing are KBR Inc. (U.S.) and Haldor Topsoe (Denmark).
