Oil production in Iraq will increase 15% y-o-y in 2015, despite the uncertainty in the security situation, strain on the oil agreement with Kurdistan, and the growing humanitarian and social challenges.

Longer term growth in the oil sector will be restrained by poor contracts, the weak financial position of the government and low oil prices.

We highlight the following trends and developments in Iraq's oil and gas sector:
- The split of the Basra crude grade into a light and heavy blend has enabled increased production from the West Qurna-2, Halfaya and Gharraf fields, resulting in record output of 4.18mn b/d in July 2014.

- Independent crude oil exports from the Kurdistan Region of Iraq will persist as federal budget payments are insufficient to cover the local budget. We do not see a breakdown in relations, but a greater proportion of oil sold directly.
